Every true fun of Scottish culture should have at least one kilt in his wardrobe. They are usually being bought in some good stores with that kind of garments. But what has a greater value to us than the stuff that we do by ourselves?

That`s is the most important reason to sew kilt on your own. It might be also a great hobby which takes quite a lot of time but gives satisfaction and a lot of joy. There are only 8 steps to do that and few things to have.
Things that you will surely need are (most of them obvious): time, needle, thread, straight pins, safety pins, tape measure, a large kilt pin, 2-3 leather straps and buckles, lots of tartan material and chalk. Optional but rather recommended to make work more pleasant and effective are: basting tape, sewing machine, lining material.

Before we start sewing we have to make a measurements. Important in this case are: waist, hips, and length. To obtain your waist measurement, simply wrap a tape measure around the narrowest part of your waist and note the measurement. Because of the amount of material that will thicken the top of the kilt, it is advised to add a few centimetres to the waist measurement to ensure that it won`t become too tight.
While measuring hips, there is an opposite site - wrapping the tape measure around the widest part of your hips and seat and record the measurement. The hip measurement is the most essential of all Again, because the kilt pleats will make the material thicker, add a few centimetres to the measurement. As it comes to length kilts are traditionally worn to mid-kneecap length, but the more modern look is to have the kilt reach to just above the knee. An easy way to get a good kilt length is to kneel on the floor and measure from your waist to the floor. And you have your length!

As its only an introduction to sewing a kilt I must tell you that rest of activities you will need to do are: translating the numbers (it is the most complicated things to do, while you have to do a lot of math), cutting, forming the shape of the kilt, pleating, lining.
The meaning of this article was to encourage sewing one or two scottish kilts - one for a friend. Cause when you do that it`s just having a harris tweed jacket and ghillie brogues and you are the man! With faith in your heart, smile on your face and a self made kilt on your….

Examples of black kilt and tartan ones you can find at Highlandstore.com . Take a look what you can buy…or sew by yourself.

There are few things that you can`t imagine Scotland without. One of them is wood wind instrument that mostly consists of reeds and a sort of bag filled with air. And it`s called bagpipes.
We have different categories of bagpipes depending on country that they were made and use in. As in all countries they are the same instruments but but they have different sound. The most famous bagpipes are the Scottish one. Although the history shows that bagpipes, as an instrument at all, were invented somewhere else.
First bagpipes are even recorded around 400 BC and they were made of dog skin (bag) and bones (chanters). In some sources there is said that this instrument was brought to British Isles from Rome in 8th century but gain popularity four hundred years later. Only a few examples of bagpipes from before 18th century left. They show that the art of making pipe wasn`t developed back then.

When only appeared in Britain they started to play a great role. Specially in Scotland were pipers took place of the harpers in the 16th century. After two hundreds of years some serious studies about this instrument appeared as for example William Dixon`s from Northumberland manuscript (1730). The great role of national instrument they were playing minimised when the western classical music became more popular and a production of instruments connected with it.
Other parts of the world got knowledge about existing of that kind of instrument thanks to expansion of British Empire. Also a large number of pipers were trained to be part of military service and participate in First and Second World War, were pipes become famous on the whole world. Police forces in Scotland or Canada have formed pipe bands and some of them existence till now (f.e.The Tayside Police Pipe band that was founded in 1905). In different countries (UK, New Zealand) bagpipes were used (and still are) in formal ceremonies.

Nowadays it has become a common tradition to play bagpipes for military and police funerals, often at the funerals of high-ranking civilian public officials, and at more happy gatherings as weddings, dances and parties. They are still played in a commercial and noncommercial ways. Bagpipes are irreplaceable in folk music. As it comes to materials and its appearance in some cases they don`t differ so much as the one played in Middle Ages, made of wood and animal skins, and in other cases they are totally new - have bags made of gore tex or bring and electronic sound.
Apart from all that history side at the 21st century bagpipes are still one of the things that first appears in our mind when we think about Scotland. It is so strong image that Scotland means tartan (pattern and material), Scottish gifts (kilt shoes, kilt, cashmere scarf), picnics spent on warm blankets and bagpipes. The history shows that Bagpipes roots are in totally different place but Scottish people love the sound of bagpipes more than any other sound.

Highland dress and the tartan are among the most powerful, romantic and dramatic of all the symbols of Scotland. It has been claimed that `a man in a kilt is a man and a half` their really is something about the wearing of the kilt that confers extra stature on its owner.
It is absolutely no coincidence that the kilted 51st Highland Division was known to be one of the most formidable formation during the First World War. Certainly the British government had no doubts on the matter when, after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie, they banned the use of Highland dress and the tartan, which they clearly saw as an incitement to further subversion. Offenders were killed or sent to the colonies.
The form of Highland dress has always owed much to the army and it was the Highland regiments which kept the Scottish kilts and the tartan alive until at last, in 1782, their use was once more permitted. Before that time, Scots were only permitted to wear any Scottish wear, if they joined the British Armed Services. Pipers were allowed to wear kilts, but usually in a Regimental color. Other service men - most were permitted to wear the balmorals with their clan badge on it. A high price to pay to wear highland clothes, laying their life on the line to do it.
Today, tartans abound and it is an unfortunate person indeed who will not be told by the kilt shops that he or she indeed can buy `their` tartan. The ascribing of a vast plethora of names to membership of various clans has long been an industry in itself - luckily there is insufficient time or space here to enter into that particular subject!

The element of fantasy is still with us today now that kilt Scotland is popular as never before. There is something that is very special indeed about the kilt and the tartan. It is a limp back indeed that does not straighten as the kilt is buckled on and a poor heart that is not lifted just a little, at the sight of the colors of the clan.
Even if someone doesn`t have an own kilt there is an easy solution - kilt hire available on internet. Ghillie brogues, black outfit or grey outfit almost everything, maybe apart from blankets ,
is possible to hire.

Kilt history brought us to this point when kilt become, beyond any doubt, the national dress of Scotland. Let us keep it that way and ensure it is not allowed to decline into mere fancy dress.
